December 2012 | Gathotkaca Gandrung

Gathotkaca Gandrung from Ronald L. C. Kienhuis on Vimeo.

Gathutkaca Gandrung is a popular dance in the Surakarta (the court city in Central Java also known as Solo) style. This dance depicts Gathutkaca, a beloved hero from Javanese mythology, dressing himself and dreaming of the object of his affections, Pregiwa, the daughter of Arjuna. Gathutkaca possesses magical powers which enable him to fly, and is a fierce warrior, but never uses a weapon in battle. The dance is in the gagah style, a forceful and powerful male style, used for the roles of strongly built kasatriyas, soldiers and generals.

  • Support the Future of Classical Javanese Music

For nearly three decades, our community-based gamelan ensemble has presented the classical music, dance, and shadow theater of Central Java to appreciative audiences. Gamelan Kusuma Laras is not only a musical ensemble, but a cultural ambassador, embracing study and performance as a powerful affirmation of shared values and humanity across cultural differences. As a small non-profit organization, we depend on the good will of people like you not only to help pay for guest artists and teachers (including our long-time mentor and inspirational Artistic Director, I.M. Harjito) but also to support our educational and outreach activities. Thank you for your kind consideration.
